Free Anti-Virus SoftwareWhile the most comprehensive anti-virus software is not free, there is some free anti-virus software available that can do a modest job for the average home user. Two of the top free anti-virus software programs are Grisoft AVG and Awil's Avast 4. Both of these applications are for personal/home users only, with paid versions available for businesses. They offer automatic updates and can scan e-mail for viruses (AVG scans Outlook only). We usually recommend AVG to our customers who choose not to purchase our first choice, Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus.

FAQ
What is a virus? An uninvited program that can affect your computer files. Some are simply pranks, while others maliciously infect your entire computer and spread to others.
How can my computer get a virus? Computers get viruses in two main ways: 1) through the Internet and/or other network connections or 2) through computer disks. Through the Internet, you can get viruses through your e-mail, instant messaging, and downloading/installing programs. You can also get virus by copying files from a disk that is infected.
How do I know if I have a virus? Sometimes, the virus will actually tell you it is there through pop-up windows or other techniques. Other times, you will simply notice your computer running very slow or your hard drive working at odd times. Your computer software may shut down for no reason or fail to load at all. The only way to know for sure if you have a virus is to run an updated anti-virus on your computer and locate the affected files. If you do not know how to do this, contact a computer repair consultant as soon as possible.
What should I do if my computer gets a virus? Do not e-mail anyone until the virus is removed, and disconnect any outside connections including the Internet. Your anti-virus program should take you through steps to remove the virus. You may only have to quarantine or delete the infected files, or you may have to restart your computer with a special boot disk. If you do not have anti-virus software or do not know how to use it, please contact a computer repair consultant immediately.
How can I keep from getting a virus on my computer? Install anti-virus software, update it and use it often. Scan all e-mail, attachments and programs before opening them. Never open any e-mail or attachments from people you do not know.
